DON’T FORGET YOUR PURPOSE!
Many years ago, a very wealthy Indian ruler decided to build a memorial for his beloved
wife who had passed away. Currently, it is revered as one of the most beautiful wonders
of the Ancient World. It is indeed one of the Seven Wonders of the world–the infamous
Taj Mahal. I’ve heard different stories about its origins. In 1629, the favorite wife of a
famous Indian ruler (Shah Jahan) died. He was grieved until he began building this
marvelous monument as a place for her tomb. It was to be a memorial for her. In the
building, the Shah had his wife’s remains in a casket. Her ashes were placed in the
middle of the ground upon which the construction of the Taj Mahal was to commence.
He wanted the monument built around her remains. A few years into this undertaking,
his grip gave way to a passion for the building and to protect itself. One day, he
stumbled over a wooden box. He then ordered some workers to remove it as it was in
the way. Several months later, he realized this box had contained his wife’s remains.
According to history, these remains could not be found. They feared it had been
destroyed.
The original purpose for this monument was lost in the details of its construction. The
theme certainly contains a truth. You can lose the purpose of the project while pursuing
the project itself. It is so easy to follow a vision but lose your focus along the way. This is
a generation that knows the price of everything, yet the value of nothing. DON’T
FORGET YOUR PURPOSE! Don’t get caught up in the project itself!
Church Building, Visitation, Sunday School Teaching, Preparation, Bible Studies,...,etc
all options are about a man named Jesus in a place called Calvary. Building a life–even
a ministry, is a noble purpose. But let’s not be like the Shah that while we are building
our Taj Mahal, we forget the purpose for which we initially began the effort. It boils down
to this: JESUS IS LORD! Love him, and make him known! That should be the
obsession of our souls, lest we wake up and say, “WHERE IS HE? WE HAVE LOST
HIM IN THE MIDST OF OUR ACTIVITY”.
